Pedestrian struck and killed Wednesday night on Hilton Head Island, police say

A pedestrian was struck and killed while trying to cross U.S. 278 Wednesday night on Hilton Head, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The victim was identified as Jeremy Schaller, 46, of Hilton Head, according to Beaufort County Coroner David Ott.

The accident took place around 8:21 p.m. on U.S. 278 near Palmetto Parkway, said Tyler Tidwell, a highway patrol spokesperson. Schaller was crossing the street when a 2008 Lexus heading west hit him, Tidwell said.

The driver of the Lexus was not injured in the crash.

An autopsy was performed, and Schaller died from blunt force trauma, Ott said.

Ott said Schaller works at a gas station at the intersection and had just gotten off work and was walking home. He said there is a crosswalk at the intersection but no street light.

“I feel personally we need more lights at these pedestrian crosswalks,” Ott said, “they’re not being seen.”

At least 20 people, including six pedestrians, have died in car accidents in Beaufort County for 2022, according to the latest available data from the S.C. Department of Public Safety.
