One dead, another hospitalized after Jasper County crash, police say

A three-car crash left one person dead and another injured near Hardeeville Sunday morning, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The crash happened just after 5 a.m. on U.S. 17 and S.C. 315, which is 7 miles south of Hardeeville, said Trooper Tyler Tidwell, a spokesperson for South Carolina Highway patrol. A Volkswagen Jetta was heading north on U.S. 17 when it ran off the road to the left and hit a concrete barrier. The car stopped after hitting the barrier and was struck by a Nissan Titan, also heading north, and a Chevy Silverado going south on U.S. 17., Tidwell said.

The driver of the Volkswagen was pronounced dead at the scene, Tidwell said. The driver of the Chevy Silverado was taken to a local hospital for injuries. Three people who were riding in the Nissan were not injured in the crash.

The identity of the Volkswagen driver was not immediately available Sunday, according to Jasper County Coroner Willie P. Aiken III.
