Accident on US 278 blocking traffic and bike path on northern Hilton Head, police say
A crash on U.S. 278 is blocking traffic on the northern end of Hilton Head Island, according to an alert sent from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office just before 2 p.m. Friday afternoon.
The accident occurred near the intersection of U.S. 278 and Matthews Drive, just south of the Hilton Head Island Airport. The right westbound lane of traffic will be blocked as authorities respond. According to traffic camera footage, one or more vehicles seem to have veered into the bike path on the right side of the highway.
No injuries were reported, according to Maj. Angela Viens, a spokesperson for the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
Afternoon drivers can expect significant traffic delays in the area. An alternate route would be to take the southern portion of Matthews Drive onto U.S. 278, according to the alert.
