Catamaran pinned on Hilton Head bridge compounds Friday afternoon traffic on US 278

An effort to move a catamaran that was pinned against the eastbound bridge onto Hilton Head Island is compounding Friday afternoon traffic.

The right eastbound lane of U.S. 278 was blocked around 4:45 p.m.

Google Maps showed heavy traffic around 5:30 p.m. along U.S. 278 and the Bluffton Parkway starting around Tanger Outlets 2 in Bluffton.

Traffic also was backed up in the westbound lanes on Hilton Head from the Cross Island Parkway to the bridge.

There were no injuries and no serious damage as the boat made contact with the bridge, said firefighter Randy Hunter, spokesperson for the Bluffton Township Fire District.

Just after 5 p.m., officers with S.C. Department of Natural Resources were on the scene planning to board the boat and move it off the bridge, said Maj. Bob Bromage with the Beaufort County Sherrif’s Office.

Drivers are asked to use caution and expect delays, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.
