The Houlihan Bridge in Port Wentworth was closed for several hours Thursday morning after it was determined to be non-drivable, according to a news release from the Port Wentworth Police Department.

Repairs were made by the Georgia Department of Transportation, and traffic that had been redirected was once again allowed to cross the span.

Information about the nature of the repair was not immediately available.

The swing bridge over the Savannah River connects Port Wentworth to Jasper County via GA 25 and SC 170. The route is used by many commuters between Beaufort County and the Savannah area.

The bridge was built in 1922 and updated in 1954.

While the bridge was closed, GA 25 was shut down going northbound from Bonny Bridge Road. The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office also were redirecting traffic coming into Georgia on SC 170.
