Estill teen track star killed in crash with gas tanker in Hampton County

A 16-year-old Estill High School student was killed in a crash on Thursday morning in Hampton County.

The fatal head-on collision just before 9 a.m. on U.S. 321 near the Luray community involved a 2013 Peterbilt gas tanker and a 2006 Hyundai Sonata, according to Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell, of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The driver of the tanker was transported to Hampton County Regional Medical Center, and the driver of the Sonata was pronounced dead at the scene, Tidwell said.

Bluffton Today identified the deceased driver as Kaniya Singleton, 16, of Estill, a senior at Estill High School.

The newspaper, citing Hampton County EMS, reported the student’s car went under the tanker on impact, causing the tanker to explode.

A post on Facebook said Singleton had been scheduled to compete at the state championships in discus.
