One dead, two injured after Monday morning crash on U.S. 21 in Burton, officials say

One person was killed and two injured Monday morning in a crash near U.S. 21 and Shanklin Road, according to the Burton Fire District.

The crash, which took place before 7 a.m., had U.S. 21 southbound traffic redirected via Shanklin Road, according to an alert from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. As of 10:36 a.m., the road had been reopened, said S.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Nick Pye.

A 2012 Ford SUV was heading south on Trask parkway while a 2014 GMC SUV was traveling north at 6:40 a.m. when the cars collided, according to Pye. Both drivers were transported to local hospitals and the passenger in the front seat of the GMC died from her injuries.

Kari Matthews, 26, of Vineland, New Jersey, was identified by Beaufort County Coroner David Ott as the person who died in the crash. Matthews was pronounced dead at the scene, Ott said. An autopsy will be scheduled and take place at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

One person was critically injured and the other appeared to have minor injuries after the crash, according to Dan Byrne, a spokesperson for the fire district.

The left lane heading south and all north lanes near U.S. 21 and Shanklin Road were closed and northbound traffic was redirected using a southbound lane, police said in an alert.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, Pye said.
