Driver killed Monday on US 278 identified as Bluffton man, 2 others injured in collision
One person was killed and two others were injured in a wreck Monday morning along U.S. 278 in Jasper County.
The collision was reported about 9:45 a.m. and involved three vehicles — a Mitsubishi SUV, a GMC pickup and a Hyundai sedan, according to Lance Cpl. Nick Pye with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The SUV and the pickup were crossing U.S. 278 from D. Mark Cummings Road near the Hardeeville Walmart, and the sedan was going west on U.S. 278. The sedan hit the SUV, which was pushed into the pickup and overturned, Pye said.
On Monday evening, Jasper County Coroner Willie Aiken identified the sedan driver who was killed as 81-year-old Ralph Stephens Jr. of Bluffton. Stephens had been transported to University Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, where he died.
The drivers of the SUV and the pickup also were transported to a local hospital.
Additional details about how the crash happened were not immediately available.
