Hilton Head woman dead, passenger is injured in Friday crash near Cross Island toll booth
The driver killed in a Friday morning crash on the Cross Island Parkway was identified as Ashley Hamilton, 38, of Hilton Head.
Lance Cpl. Nick Pye with South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash occurred at 8:45 a.m. on U.S. Highway 278 near Marshland Road and involved one car, a 2015 Lexus SUV driven by Hamilton. The car ran off the road and flipped over, Pye said.
The driver died of “fatal injuries,” and a single passenger in the car was transported to a Hilton Head Hospital for treatment, he said.
The passenger was transported for possible injuries, a category that includes non-evident injuries, temporary unconsciousness and nausea or hysteria, Pye said.
Beaufort County Chief Deputy Coroner Debbie Youmans identified Hamilton as the driver after notifying her family.
The crash caused delays on the Hilton Head Island bridge, blocking the right lane of U.S. Highway 278 westbound near the soon-to-be demolished Cross Island Parkway toll booths for about two hours.
The crash site was cleared shortly before 11 a.m., according to Maj. Bob Bromage with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
