Critical injuries were reported in a crash Friday afternoon that blocked traffic on S.C. 170.

The Burton and Bluffton fire districts, along with Beaufort County EMS, responded to a head-on collision on the Broad River Bridge about 3 p.m. A photo from the scene showed a wrecked blue pickup and white SUV.

An off-duty Lady’s Island/St. Helena Fire District employee, Lt. John Thompson, was the first to arrive on the scene, according to a news release from the Burton Fire District.

Two people appeared to have critical injuries, the news release said.

Because a medical helicopter was unable to fly due to the weather, one injured person was transported to Savannah Memorial Hospital and the other to Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said all westbound lanes on S.C. 170 were blocked before the scene was cleared. By 5:30 p.m., Google Maps indicated no delays.
