Rollover crash blocks traffic to and from St. Helena Island Thursday morning

Drivers heading on and off St. Helena Island may not be able to do so until late morning because of a rollover crash early Thursday, fire officials say.

The crash occurred around 7:11 a.m. between a Toyota pickup truck and a garbage truck on Sea Island Parkway, according to Lady’s Island-St. Helena Fire District spokesperson Scott Harris.

The crash happened about 100 yards from the Chowan Creek Bridge, the only way to get on and off the Island, Harris said. The garbage truck was leaving the island, and the pickup truck was driving to it when the two collided, Harris said.

Both drivers were transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital by Beaufort County EMS for treatment, Harris said. He was uncertain about the extent of their injuries.

Traffic should be cleared within the next 45 minutes, Harris said about 10 a.m. Drivers can expect delays.
