Traffic at near standstill on I-95 from Hardeeville into Georgia after multiple wrecks

I-95 was reported to be at a near standstill Wednesday night after multiple accidents.

A news release around 5:45 p.m. from the city of Hardeeville said heavy rain was to blame.

At 7 p.m., Google Maps showed traffic remained backed up in the southbound lanes from several miles north of Exit 8 at U.S. 278, across the state line and nearly to Port Wentworth.

Traffic also was heavy in the northbound lanes from Port Wentworth into Jasper County.

Detective Sgt. Jake Higgins, spokesman for the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, said around 9 p.m. that southbound lanes were expected to be open shortly. The opening of northbound lanes was still undetermined.

He urged drivers to exercise caution.
