Traffic alert: Crash on Hilton Head bridge caused injuries, closed one westbound lane

Update: The crash was cleared as of 2:45 p.m.

A crash on the Hilton Head Island bridge over Skull Creek closed one westbound lane Wednesday afternoon, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Two people were injured in the crash, Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Maj. Bob Bromage said. At least one of those people were transported to the hospital by ambulance for evaluation of their injuries.

Three vehicles were involved in the crash: One pickup truck and two small cars.

A fire truck and ambulance were on scene in the left lane at 2 p.m. By 2:15 p.m., the emergency vehicles were gone but the left lane was still blocked off by sheriff’s deputies.

People could be seen on the traffic cameras standing near the crash site on the side of U.S. 278. A wrecker arrived on scene around 2:20 p.m. to get the cars out of the road, Bromage said.

The closed lane is backing up traffic going off the island. Westbound traffic was backed up to Gumtree Road.

Google Maps showed a 30-minute delay at 2 p.m.
