Pair of crashes near Hilton Head bridges causes delays Friday afternoon

Two minor crashes near the Hilton Head bridges have backed up traffic heading toward the island Friday afternoon.

One crash happened near the base of the Hilton Head bridges near Jenkins Road in the eastbound lanes, according to Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Maj. Bob Bromage.

Two cars were involved in the crash, but it has been moved off the road. There are no injuries, Bromage said.

The second crash happened further down eastbound U.S. 278 where two cars collided near Squire Pope Road in a fender bender.

There were no injuries and the cars have been moved off the road, Bromage said.

Traffic heading onto the island for Memorial Day weekend was snarled as a result of the crashes.

Eastbound traffic was backed up to the Tanger 2 Outlets in Bluffton, and Google Maps showed a 15-minute delay on eastbound U.S. 278.

Separately, westbound traffic on U.S. 278 was backed up near the exit of the Cross Island Parkway, but Bromage said that delay is more typical of rush hour traffic.
