Wreck blocks traffic headed off Hilton Head on Friday afternoon
A vehicle crash blocked westbound U.S. 278 traffic on Hilton Head Island Friday afternoon.
The wreck occurred just before 1 p.m. near Blue Heron Point Road and Windmill Harbour, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
A damaged SUV could be seen resting sideways across one lane on the Beaufort County traffic camera system after the wreck.
Maj. Bob Bromage, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, said the driver hit the guardrail while experiencing a medical issue and also sustained minor injuries in the crash. The driver was transported to a local hospital.
The SUV was the only car involved, Bromage said.
For a time, both westbound lanes were closed. Around 1:15 p.m., one lane of the highway had been reopened, but traffic was already backed up from the Hilton Head bridges to the Cross Island Parkway.
The scene was cleared just before 2 p.m. Traffic along westbound U.S. 278 remained heavy from the Indigo Run area to the Cross Island Parkway.
