More than 1,600 are running in weekend Hilton Head races. What that means for traffic

As more than 1,600 runners participate in the annual Hilton Head Marathon, Half & 8K races Saturday, island residents should watch out for traffic and road closures, police say.

“Traffic to Jarvis Creek Park off Hwy 278, Nature’s Way, Pembroke Drive, Cross Island Parkway, Palmetto Bay Rd, Arrow Road, Marshland Road, Spanish Wells Road, Point Comfort Road and inside Spanish Wells Plantation will be affected at some time between 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m on Saturday,” Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Wednesday press release.

“The Cross Island Parkway and all toll booths will remain open; however, one lane of westbound Cross Island Parkway, towards Bluffton, will be reduced to one lane from about 7:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m.”

The race will benefit area charities including the Hilton Head Rotary Club, the Hilton Head High School Athletic Department, the Bluffton ROTC, and the Hilton Head Christian Academy.

In the last 16 years, the race has donated more than $59,000 for local charities, according to its event page.
