After getting a ticket, Hilton Head driver didn’t curse his luck. He grabbed his camera
A Hilton Head man was pulled over by a South Carolina state trooper earlier this month. But he didn’t react the way you might expect.
Instead of cursing his luck, Juan Moreno decided to turn the ticket into something positive.
He created a PSA-style video and posted it on his Facebook page.
“I would like to thank the officer for giving me the opportunity to learn about new laws,” he says in the video. “Or maybe even laws that we are not aware of.”
Moreno says he didn’t know he was breaking a law when he didn’t move over for a law enforcement vehicle on Jan. 2.
South Carolina was the first state to pass the “move over” law in 2002. It’s now in effect in 42 states.
The law says vehicles must change lanes — if safe to do so — when approaching an emergency vehicle on the side of the road. If it’s not safe to change lanes, drivers should slow down and proceed with caution.
Drivers should also move to the side of the road and come to a complete stop when an emergency vehicle is trying to make its way down a road, the law states.
Failure to obey this law can result in a $300 to $500 fine.
When Moreno was ticketed for breaking this law, he took it as a learning opportunity. And he learned he wasn’t alone.
Moreno checked out a website which told him that 71 percent of Americans were unaware of the “move over” law.
That’s when he decided to create the video in hopes of spreading awareness. The video has gained more than 4,000 views.
“We need to respect the laws so that (law enforcement officers) can do their jobs safely,” Moreno said. “So they too can return home safe and sound.”
