What was the ‘traffic hazard’ that closed lanes on US 278 Friday morning?
A “traffic hazard” on U.S. 278 blocked westbound lanes at Simmonsville Road in Bluffton for a short time on Friday morning, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Capt. Bob Bromage of the Sheriff’s Office, muriatic acid spilled on the highway after a few containers fell from a vehicle.
The chemical was not a danger to drivers or pedestrians, according to the Bluffton Township Fire District.
Law enforcement and firefighters worked to dilute the acid at the scene before all lanes were opened.
The center and left lanes were closed about 8:45 a.m. and were open by 9:15 a.m.
