A driver went around the gate at a Beaufort County rail crossing. It didn’t end well
A driver who attempted to bypass the gates at a Beaufort County railroad crossing got stuck on the tracks Wednesday night.
The vehicle stalled about 7:30 p.m. while crossing the CSX tracks at Salkehatchie Road and Railroad Avenue in Yemassee, according to a news release from the town.
No injuries were reported. Both northbound and southbound trains had to be halted until the vehicle was removed.
The driver later was charged with failure to obey a signal indicating the approach of a train, said assistant town clerk Matthew Garnes.
The gates were stuck in the down position for a time and delayed traffic on Castle Hall Road, Yemassee Highway and Salkehatchie Road, the news release said.
