Highway Patrol: Sun City driver had ‘medical emergency’ before crashing into tree

A driver suffered a medical emergency Thursday evening just prior to a single-car accident in Sun City Hilton Head.

The crash — which happened at 7 p.m. inside the gated retirement community — sent a 69-year-old Bluffton woman to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, S.C Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Matthew Southern said Friday morning.

The driver of the 2016 four-door Nissan was traveling west on Landing Lane near Bishop Street when she “experienced a medical emergency, ran of the road to the right, and struck a tree,” he said.

Southern said Highway Patrol investigators to do not know the exact nature of the driver’s medical emergency.
