Toll collection on Hilton Head’s Cross Island Parkway to resume Monday

dmartin@islandpacket.com

Toll collections on Hilton Head Island’s Cross Island Parkway are set to resume at 6 a.m. Monday after they were suspended following Hurricane Matthew.

The temporary suspension of the $1.25 toll was put in place to allow “traffic to flow freely during (storm) recovery operations,” according to a news release from the S.C. Department of Transportation.

The 7.5-mile parkway opened in 1998.

The debt taken on by the state to build the road is on schedule to be paid off by June 30, 2021.

After that date, drivers will no longer have to pay a toll.
