The Adopt-A-Highway organization from Dataw Island was recently recognized as Beaufort County’s best.

The organization was presented earlier this month with the Adopt-A-Highway County Group of the Year Award, according to a news release from the county.

“Dataw Island Adopt-A-Highway group covers a six-mile stretch of U.S. 21 on St. Helena Island,” the release said. “They have 11 group leaders and 40 volunteers (who) pick up litter monthly.”

In 2015, the group picked up 510 bags — totaling 7,650 pounds — of litter, according to the release.
