No bull about it. Beaufort school goes into lockdown after animal spotted nearby
Lowcountry residents are used to wildlife encounters, especially alligators, turtles, and even a snake or two, but commuters traveling on a busy Lady’s Island road Thursday morning were in for a different surprise.
A bull — yes, you read that right — was on the loose on Sams Point Road. He appeared to be dawdling in between cars, making traffic even worse than normal.
Beaufort Academy, a private school nearby, was put on lockdown as a precaution after the bull was seen in the woods across the street from the school, according to Beaufort Academy Front Office Manager Heidi Richards.
The school ended its lockdown around 10 a.m., she said.
The bull had escaped from a pasture near the Sams Point Road area of Lady’s Island, according to Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Bob Bromage.
“Deputies were able to corral the bull in a wooded area and secure it with a rope,” Bromage said. The bull was returned to its owner, he said.
Lady’s Island resident and local Realtor Kourtney Thomson posted a video of the bull running down the road on her Facebook page and wrote, “Live in front of Beaufort Academy.”
She had just left an event at the school when she saw the bull running between cars. Her parents, who were also at the school, didn’t leave as fast and had to stay until the lockdown was lifted.
“I don’t know how to make memes, but I needed a ‘marked safe’ from getting hit by a bull today,” she said.
