How To ...

Be joyful

Get out your shuckers, knives, screwdriver and cutest bib (or come without) and head over to the Rotary Club of Bluffton's annual classic Oyster Roast.

The star of the all-you-can-eat annual event is the freshly harvested May River oysters, and you can never go wrong with a side of the Rotary's homemade hand-cut fries. Those who stay away from oysters can chow down on chili, hot dogs and brats. Soda, beer and wine are available at an additional cost.

The community event features live music by Bluffton's Lowcountry Boil.

WHEN: 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday

WHERE: Bluffton Oyster Factory Park, 63 Wharf St., Bluffton.

COST: $30 in advance; $35 day of the event

DETAILS: For tickets, go to www.blufftonrotary.org, call 843- 815-2277, or stop by various merchants in Bluffton.

SATURDAY

Let it snow, let it snow, or at least let the young ones in our warm-weather climate have fun at Hilton Head's version of a snow day.

Hosted by the Island Recreation Center, the event is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Shelter Cove Community Park, 39 Shelter Cove Lane. The winter scene includes a snow field, pony rides, inflatable rides, bungee jump, kids' zone, zip line, face painting and more. (Let's just hope it's not too cold outside to enjoy.)

Admission is $10 per child and free for adult. For more information go to www.islandreccenter.org or call 843-681-7273.

SUNDAY

Listen to an assortment of music written by different composers from different eras when three musicians perform at the USCB Concert Series.

Korean-born pianist Jeewon Park, Montreal-native clarinet player Romie de Guise-Langlois and cello player Edward Arron will display their elegant abilities performing the works of Ludwig van Beethoven, Frederic Chopin, Leonard Bernstein, Manuel de Falla, and Astor Piazzolla, spanning from 1770 to 1992.

The concert is at the USCS Center for the Arts, 801 Carteret St. in Beaufort. Ticket prices are $52, $47 or $42. For more information and tickets, go to www.uscb.edu/festivalseries or call 843-208-8246, Monday through Friday.

Be active

If the cost of playing golf on one of Hilton Head's 24 championship courses has got you down, now is the time of year to play some of those killer courses on the island and beyond.

Greens fees are typically as low this time of year, and with a special offer (search the Internet) and local residency (let them know at the clubhouse), there's a good bet it won't break the bank.

And don't procrastinate. At many courses, green fees will start increasing in February as the height of the season (springtime, and again in the fall), is as close as a three-foot putt.

WHY I CONNECT

Kathy Fotia

Children's Relief Fund

"My sister-in-law started the organization (in 1991) because their son was born with a debilitating disease. For that reason, it is special to me because all the money raised is used locally for disabled children in the Hilton Head and Bluffton area."
