Be joyful

Now is a delicious time to try a restaurant you've been meaning to get to or return to one of your old favorites because Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce restaurant week begins Saturday.

Modeled after restaurant weeks in New York and other cities, foodies' favorite eight nights of dining out include 50-plus restaurants offering value-priced, pre-fixed menus. At some restaurants, the chefs not only serve specialty dishes but also might try out new creations that could show up on their menus in the future. Bon appetit!

WHEN: Saturday through Jan. 30

WHERE: 50-plus restaurants on Hilton Head and in Bluffton

COST: Varies

DETAILS: Go to www.hiltonheadisland.org/restaurantweek as more participating restaurants and menu are added daily.

MONDAYSpend part of today's national holiday by commemorating the late, great civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.

Participate in a march at 10 a.m. starting and finishing at the Hilton Head Island High School parking lot, 70 Wilborn Rd. Afterward, attend a ceremony at the high school's Seahawk Cultural Center and then stay for a free community lunch between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. at the high school cafeteria.

Pay tribute in Bluffton by attending a 12:30 p.m. memorial service at town hall, 20 Bridge St. A memorial walk and parade begins at 2:15 p.m., followed by a cookout at 3 p.m. at Oyster Factory Park.

FRIDAY

WHY I CONNECT

Joan Weaver, volunteer at Meals on Wheels

"Volunteering has enriched my life in ways I can't describe. The relationships I have formed have been amazing, and the overall experience has been humbling. Many of the people I have served have had extraordinary lives and have been kind enough to share their stories with me. I am a better person for it."

Be active

Explore the waterways around Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge with the Coastal Discovery Museum. Book a two-hour tour where you will learn about the salt marsh, maritime forest, barrier islands and history of Pinckney Island.

A naturalist will be on board to identify the plants and animals you'll see along the way. The boat leaves from Hudson's Docks on Squire Pope Road on Hilton Head. Tours are several Saturdays throughout the winter, weather permitting. The cost is $35 per person and reservations are required by calling the Coastal Discovery Museum at 843-689-6767, ext. 223.
