How To for Dec. 20, 2015: Guests, volunteers make Hilton Head Christmas dinner special

It takes a community to plan a Christmas dinner and Hilton Head knows how to step up in a big way.

The 13th annual meal is open to all and is truly a local gathering, including roughly 400 volunteers who pitch in.

This year's menu includes a full turkey buffet. Free-will offerings are accepted for the cost of the meal, and also for Meals on Wheels and Second Helpings.

The First Presbyterian Church is giving its space for this year's dinner. Hudson's Seafood House on the Dock, the Beach House, Jim 'n' Nicks, the Smokehouse, Second Helpings, Resort Services Inc. and Walmart are among other businesses involved in the preparation of the meal or the donation of food and equipment.

WHEN: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday

WHERE: First Presbyterian Church, 540 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head

COST: Free

DETAILS: For reservations, call 843-304-1086.

FRIDAY

Those in the Beaufort area who are unable to spend the holiday with family -- and all others in need -- are invited to celebrate at Plant the Seed Ministry's Christmas meal. The dinner is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Atlantic Inn parking lot, 2249 Boundary St. in Beaufort.

Free turkey and ham dinners will be served with traditional side dishes, including sweet potatoes, stuffing, macaroni and cheese, tea, coffee and pie.

For more information, call 843-575-2200.

WEDNESDAY

Celebrate the holidays in Harbour Town under the Liberty oak and take in a Gregg Russell show. The singer/songwriter, mostly known for his nightly summer concerts, will perform songs of the season for children and adults. The show begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by a special appearance by our favorite person this time of year -- Santa.

While visiting the popular spot in Sea Pines Plantation, stroll along the harbor and enjoy the illuminated seasonal figures and the 30-foot lighted Christmas tree.

Be Active

Segue into exploring Hilton Head by cruising around on a Segway electrical scooter.

Make reservations for a guided or self-guided tour at Honey Horn Plantation, 70 Honey Horn Drive, or a guided tour on the miles of pathways beginning at the Holiday Inn beach house at 1 South Forest Beach Road. (Segways available at Shelter Cove during the summer.)

For rates and reservations, go to www.prosegway.com or call 800-800-0424.

Volunteer

Lois Willig

Co-organizer/volunteer for Hilton Head Christmas dinner

"Helping organize the free community Christmas day dinner for 13 years provides the opportunity to be part of a 'family' for the 400 volunteers and our diners during a time that is often depressing and lonely for them. It's a continuum of giving as donations and extra food go to local charities. This is absolutely priceless."
