Beaufort County School District seeking volunteers for "Knockout Dropout Day"

The Beaufort County School District is seeking volunteers to help visit the homes of students who did not return to class for the 2014-15 school year, according to a news release.

The goal of "Knockout Dropout Day" Sept. 26 is to convince students to return to school before Oct. 1, when the state officially designates them as dropouts. The event is the school district's second annual home visit event; last year's event had over 100 volunteers, the release said.

About 400 high school-age students didn't show up on the first day of school. That number has dropped to about 270 thanks to intensive school-led efforts, but the district hopes to reduce it to zero, the release said.

Interested volunteers should contact Lakinsha Swinton in the district's Office of Student Services at 843-322-5451 or lakinsha.swinton@beaufort.k12.sc.us.
