All Beaufort County schools and district offices will be closed on Wednesday, March 5, in anticipation of the severe storms and possible tornadoes heading to the Lowcountry.

This decision was announced on Tuesday afternoon after the school district consulted with the Beaufort County Emergency Management team, who have been monitoring the forecasted storm and wind conditions.

In addition to no in-class learning there will also be no E-learning on Wednesday. District buildings will also be closed.

The district gets five E-learning days and three make-up days, which have all been used due to previous weather days. It is unclear how this closure will impact the final day of the school year.

BCSD states that this decision held many factors. One of the largest was the anticipated wind gusts over 40 mph that can prohibit the safe travel of school buses.

BCSD is advising parents, students and faculty to monitor the district’s websites and social media channels for the latest communications, as well as local media outlets for weather conditions.

After school activities also affected

All extracurricular and athletic activities scheduled for Wednesday, March 5, have been canceled.

Unless the district communicates otherwise, schools will resume normal operations on Thursday, March 6.

According to Candace Bruder, spokesperson for the BCSD, the last time the school district closed for severe weather this year was on January 21-24 due to snow and ice conditions.

This story has been updated to reflect Thursday operations for BCSD.
