New Bluffton elementary school gets name, mascot and colors. Here’s what they are

Beaufort County’s new Bluffton elementary school will be called May River Elementary School, with a manatee as its mascot. The school’s colors will be blue, black and silver.

The school is slated to open for 800 students in 2026 on property near May River High School, near New Riverside. It will be the 23rd elementary school in the district and the fifth in the Bluffton area. The district allotted $56.6 million for the school’s construction from the $439 million referendum that passed in November 2023.

The new elementary school’s construction was announced in May 2023 with an aim to manage Bluffton’s fast-growing population and student overcrowding. Construction is expected to start fall 2024, according to Chief Operations Officer Robert Oetting.
