Rumors of $5 bathroom passes? Here’s Bluffton High’s real bathroom pass policy

Just because it’s on Facebook, doesn’t make it true.

A rumor that students would have to pay $5 to go to the bathroom if they ran out of passes started on Facebook Tuesday morning from an anonymous Bluffton High School parent. Between that and a follow-up post, they received more than 100 comments and reactions.

Bluffton High School won’t fine students if they exceed their bathroom pass limit, according to district spokesperson Candace Bruder.

She said the policy isn’t new and students are given three bathroom passes per quarter, or 45 school days, for each of their four classes for a total of 12 passes per quarter. Passes can’t be used in the first or last 15 minutes of class, and only one student at a time can leave for the restroom. Only one student is allowed per stall. Students are given unlimited time before school, between classes and lunch.

She confirmed that if a student is having an emergency, but is out of passes they can talk to their teacher for an exception.

Bruder said a $5 fee was never proposed and there is no possibility something like that will be implemented. She didn’t say how the rumor may have started.
