Not just the Kindergartners are new at Robert Smalls Leadership Academy this school year, the is building too.

Construction for the pre-K through eighth-grade Beaufort school took about a year and a half. It started January 2022 and the ribbon cutting was Aug. 6. At $63 million it was the largest project funded through the $345 bond referendum county voters approved in November 2019.

The school has:

  • Two floors and four wings
  • Outdoor learning pavilions and spaces
  • Two-story lobby that pays tribute to the life and journey of Robert Smalls
  • Corridor with a historical timeline depicting the school’s history as well as significant local, state, and national events
  • New ball fields to be completed January 2024
  • Parking
  • Exterior detailing resembling the C.S.S. Planter, the ship commandeered by Robert Smalls.
