Here are the next 10 books up for review that were taken out of Beaufort County schools

The Beaufort County School District on Tuesday announced the next 10 titles to be reviewed by committees set up to make decisions on 97 books altogether that were removed from school libraries in October.

These books will be reviewed in open forum on March 15 and are being selected based on print availability. There are seven members on each committee. The books are:

  • “The Art of Racing in the Rain,” by Garth Stein

  • “The Bluest Eye,” by Toni Morrison

  • “The Female of the Species,” by Mindy McGinnis

  • “The Haters,” by Jesse Andrews

  • “The Upside of Unrequited,” by Becky Albertalli

  • “The You I’ve Never Known,” by Ellen Hopkins

  • “This One Summer,” by Mariko Tamaki

  • “Tilt,” by Ellen Hopkins

  • “Wintergirls,” by Laurie Halse Anderson

  • “Yolk,” by Mary H.K. Choi

At this rate, review committees are deciding on 10 titles per month. They have read and decided on 26 titles so far, banning “Nineteen Minutes” by Jodi Picoult and “It Ends With Us” by Colleen Hoover. They returned 24 other books to library shelves in some capacity.

They limited many titles’ circulation from what grades the books were available in before. For a few, they expanded circulation.

The committees’ decisions can be appealed, but only by the original complainants — outspoken GOP politician Mike Covert and parent and Moms for Liberty member Ivie Szalai. Then the school board makes the final decision.

Should the district continue at the rate of 10 books per month, the process will be complete in September — keeping some books off shelves for nearly a year as they await review.
