‘To the next level:’ Beaufort County schools announce new district-wide athletic director
The Beaufort County School District has promoted one of its own to the district-wide athletic director role, a job that has been vacant for several years, the school district announced this week.
Carlos Cave has worked in education for almost three decades and has been with the Beaufort County School District since August 2008. Since 2011, he has worked as the athletic director for Whale Branch Early College High School and left to start his new position at the end of November though the announcement was made Monday, said Candace Bruder, a school district spokesperson.
As a veteran educator, Cave is a part of several state-wide sports committees, including the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association where he is president. He is also the vice president of the South Carolina High School League Executive Committee, an organization that oversees rules and regulations related to high school athletic programs in the state.
When asked why the role had not been filled for so long, Bruder said that school officials had not found who they wanted for the job.
As athletic director for the entire district, Cave will also be responsible for managing board funds set aside for the district’s sports programs meaning he will have a “voice at the table” when the budget is being discussed, Bruder said.
Cave will also be responsible for overseeing 14 secondary school sites in Beaufort County and ensuring that they comply with the South Carolina High School League regulations. Some of these rules include not allowing students to play sports without a parent’s permission slip and making sure that coaches and players only practice during their sport’s season.
In his new position, Cave will make $122,096 a year, a number approved by the school board when deciding the 2022-23 school year budget, according to Bruder.
Among the most highly anticipated aspects of the job for Cave include elevating his athletic staff to further their careers and motivating students, he said in a school district press release.
“I understand how important it is to help our student-athletes find a balance in support of both academic and sport-specific goals,” he said.
The Beaufort County School District, said Superintendent Frank Rodriguez, is happy to have Cave.
“Given his dedication and wealth of experience, I know he will lead our athletic programming with dynamism and professionalism,” Rodriguez said, “taking our athletic administrators and student-athletes to the next level, both on and off the field.”
