Registration opens soon for Beaufort Co. schools kindergarten, pre-K. How to sign up

Spring semester has just begun in Beaufort County, but preparations for the fall are already underway.

Starting Tuesday, parents will be able to preregister their children for kindergarten or pre-kindergarten in Beaufort County School District by visiting the school serving their neighborhood. The pre-registration period will last until Feb. 28.

Parents can find their attendance zone on the district’s website or by calling the elementary schools in their area.

To register your student, you’ll need their birth certificate and two proofs of residency, such as a utility bill showing a home address.

You’ll also need a South Carolina Certificate of Immunization, or a shot record. That can be obtained from a private physician or clinic, the Beaufort County Health Department, Beaufort County/Jasper Comprehensive Health Services, the Naval Hospital or Volunteers of Medicine.

Students who will turn 5 by Sept. 1, 2022 are eligible for kindergarten; students who will be 6 by that date are eligible for first grade, and students who will be 4 are eligible for pre-kindergarten.

Space is limited in pre-kindergarten programs. The district will conduct “Child Find” screenings of applicants from Feb. 28 to March 4, and will make decisions on pre-K placements after that.

“Decisions on placement for Pre-K will be made at each school after children’s screenings are complete,” according to a district press release. “Children are ranked in order of greatest need for participation in the program based on the provided list of at-risk indicators.”

For more information about pre-registering a child in Beaufort County, call your neighborhood school or the district office’s Office of Early Childhood at 843-521-2399.
