Beaufort, Jasper schools are changing free meal programs for the summer. What to know

As students and teachers finish one of the strangest school years in recent history, Beaufort and Jasper County School Districts are making some changes to the free meal programs they’ve run since South Carolina’s schools closed in March amid the coronavirus pandemic.

On June 8, Beaufort County School District will move from daily meal distribution to a Monday, Wednesday and Friday schedule. Students will get four meals on Mondays and Wednesdays, and six on Fridays.

Anyone under 18 - or under 21 with disabilities - is eligible to receive the meals, which can be picked up between 9 a.m. and noon at Coosa Elementary, St. Helena Elementary, Battery Creek High, Whale Branch Middle and Bluffton Middle schools.

Meals will also be dropped off along bus routes across the county. Those delivery routes have been in place since March, and can be found at beaufortschools.net.

The changes will be in place until at least June 30.

In addition to school and bus pick-up sites, other pick-up options will be available:

  • Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lowcountry – Cold breakfasts and hot lunches will be provided June 15-July 31 at the organization’s Sheldon, Bluffton and Hilton Head Island locations.

  • Port Royal YMCA – Cold breakfasts and hot lunches will be provided June 8-Aug. 14.

  • Island Recreation Center – Hot lunches will be provided to program participants June 8-Aug. 14.

  • Neighborhood Outreach Connection – Hot lunches will be provided to participants in NOC programs at Parkview (beginning June 8) and Marsh Pointe (beginning June 15) in Beaufort; Onyx (beginning June 8) and Avalon Shores (beginning June 8) in Bluffton; and St. Luke’s Church (beginning June 22).

  • St. Helena Migrant Camp – Cold breakfasts, hot lunches and hot dinners will be provided to children of program participants June 8-July 3 (8-9 a.m., noon-12:45 p.m., 4-4:45 p.m.)

To date, more than 405,000 free meals have been distributed by the district, spokesman Jim Foster said Friday.
