How Beaufort, Jasper Co. school students can pick up free lunch, breakfast, homework
Both Beaufort County and Jasper County school districts are closed for the next two weeks, but students can get free breakfasts and lunches at pickup sites throughout both counties — along with homework for their time away from schools in Beaufort County.
In Beaufort County, 11 schools and one community center will serve as drive-through meal pick-up sites: Battery Creek High, Beaufort High, Beaufort Middle, Bluffton High, Hilton Head Island High, James J. Davis Early Childhood Center, Okatie Elementary, Red Cedar Elementary, St. Helena Elementary, Whale Branch Middle, Whale Branch Early College High and the Port Royal YMCA.
Any child age 18 or younger can receive free breakfasts and lunches regardless of meal status during the school year, superintendent Frank Rodriguez said in a press release. Meals cannot be eaten at these sites, and nobody will be allowed into school buildings.
Breakfast will be available at these sites from 7:15 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., and lunch will be available from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
As of Tuesday, the district will also deliver meals along bus routes, following feedback from parents who couldn’t take time off work to visit a meal pick-up site. According to district spokesman Jim Foster, buses will stop for 20 minutes at each of the new sites, which you can find on the district’s website.
On Monday, the district served around 1,100 meals to students; on Tuesday, they served more than 3,000, Foster said.
Foster said Monday that if parents have issues with meal pick-up they can call 843-322-0805.
Foster said Monday that students are receiving “online academic lessons, virtual field trips and paper-based work packets” through Tuesday, and that the district will tell parents “how those assignments will work during the shutdown” Monday.
“Schools will provide paper packets for students who either don’t have a district-issued mobile device at home or who can’t complete web-based assignments because of internet connection issues,” Foster said. “Work packets might include activity sheets, research projects and books from school libraries. Parents are picking up work packets today or tomorrow, depending on the school.”
Jasper County
In Jasper County, schools buses will deliver lunches and breakfast for the next day to several locations “at some point” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Two school buses will deliver to the Hardeeville area, and two will deliver to the Ridgeland area, according to district spokesman Travis Washington.
On Monday, the district served 373 meals to students; on Tuesday, they served 507, Washington said.
