Seven killed on SC roadways over Memorial Day weekend

South Carolina Department of Public Safety officials said seven people died on highways throughout the state during Memorial Day weekend.

There were no weather-related fatalities due to tropical depression Bonnie, state officials said.

In 2015, eight traffic fatalities were recorded over the same holiday period.

In two of the deaths, officials said a seat belt was used, while two others did not use a seat belt.

As of May 30, 368 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 381 highway deaths during the same time period in 2015.

Of the 249 motor vehicle occupants who have died in 2016, 114 were not wearing safety belts.

Through midnight May 30, 45 pedestrians died compared to 45 in 2015; 49 motorcyclists died compared to 51 in 2015; and ten bicyclists died compared to nine in 2015 on state roads and highways.
