3 face charges in Sea Pines television thefts
Three people were charged with grand larceny and first-degree burglary after four televisions with a combined value of $5,000 were stolen from a Sea Pines home late Monday night.
Marcos Chavarria-Lobo, 23, of Hilton Head Island; Camille Carter, 21, of Okatie; and Alec Haughton-James, 23, of Hilton Head, were charged after Chavarria-Lobo told deputies he, Carter and Haughton-James had taken the televisions from a home that was under construction on Mizzenmast Court, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office news release.
Chavarria-Lobo was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center.
Investigators then turned to USCB campus police for surveillance video of Carter and Haughton-James, who were believed to live at the New River campus, the release said.
Video surveillance showed Carter carrying a big-screen television from her car to her dorm early Tuesday afternoon.
USCB police went to the vehicle and observed what appeared to be a television inside, the release said.
As campus police waited for sheriff’s office investigators to arrive, Carter and Haughton-James arrived and agreed to be brought in for questioning at the Bluffton Police Department.
While they were being questioned, a warrant to search Carter’s vehicle and dorm room was obtained, and investigators found two additional televisions, the release said.
Carter and Haughton-James were taken to the detention center.
Bonds for Chavarria-Lobo, Carter and Haughton-James were set at $60,000 with ankle monitoring once they are released.
