Officials seek help identifying pedestrian struck and killed in Jasper County

The Jasper County coroner is seeking help to identify a man struck and killed on U.S. 17 early Saturday morning.

The accident occurred shortly before 4 a.m. about a mile from the Georgia state line, according to Sgt. Bob Beres with the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The man was walking in the roadway when he was struck by a Jeep Cherokee traveling south, Beres said. The driver was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

The pedestrian died from his injuries, according to Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls.

The man had no identification on him at the time of the incident, Sauls said, and has asked for the public’s help in identifying him.

The man is about 6 feet tall, with a slender build, and is African-American with a medium-brown complexion.

He appears to be about 30-35 years of age, though he could be younger, Sauls said.

He was wearing a multicolored T-shirt and khaki-colored jeans. In addition, the man was wearing a lanyard around his neck that held a number of keys.

He also was carrying a package of cigarettes and a cigarette lighter.

Anyone with information on the man’s identity may call the coroner’s office at 843-815-5535.
