St. Helena Island shooting leaves three injured
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an early morning shooting on St. Helena Island, officials say.
The shooting occurred at a residence on Roman Lane — about one mile north of the Sea Island Parkway — that had been turned into a makeshift nightclub, according to an advisory issued by the sheriff’s office Saturday morning.
Deputies responding to the scene around 3 a.m. spotted a vehicle leaving the residence at a high rate of speed, the advisory stated.
Deputies caught up with the vehicle and found one of the occupants, a man, with multiple gunshot wounds. The man was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
Another man with injuries and a woman with a single gunshot wound arrived at the hospital a short time later. Deputies determined their injuries were connected to the shooting incident. It was later determined that the man had been trampled at the scene by those trying to flee the shooting, according to law enforcement.
No one in either of the parties cooperated with investigators, the advisory stated.
Back at the scene, a crowd of about 20 people attempted to leave the area rather than cooperate with deputies who had arrived to secure the area. Deputies discovered various illegal drugs, a handgun and multiple spent cartridge casings, the advisory stated.
A warrant was secured, and investigators searched the residence and found additional spent cartridge casings and a small amount of marijuana.
In addition, investigators believe the residence was being used for socializing and was not being used as a home.
Those responsible for the shooting have not been identified, and the condition of the three who were injured is not available at this time, officials say.
