A Bluffton man was arrested Monday in connection with the death of Darnell Williams, who died after he was shot in a Hilton Head Island parking lot.

Deputies arrested Allen Haynes, 53, in connection with the Feb. 18 mid-day shooting of Williams, 44, in the parking lot of the Haig Point Embarkation, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Haynes was charged with murder and possession of firearm in the commission of a violent crime.

Investigators learned Haynes and Williams were co-workers at Haig Point and knew each other well, the release said.

The two arrived separately that day in the parking lot and were going to take the ferry to Haig Point for work.

Deputies allege that, after a brief interaction between the two, Haynes, who was sitting in his vehicle, shot Williams as he stood close by.

He then fled the parking lot, the release said.

Williams was flown to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators have not yet learned the motive for the shooting, and the weapon has not been recovered.

Haynes was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center.

Fabian Grey, 33, of Bluffton was also charged in the incident with misprision of a felony.

Investigators allege he intentionally provided deputies with misinformation to mislead them in the shooting investigation, according to a second news release from the Sheriff's Office.

On the day of the shooting, Grey called 911 and said Williams was shot next to an unoccupied vehicle in the parking lot. Grey also said he found Williams but did not witness the shooting or see who had done it, the release said.

During an interview with investigators, Haynes said Grey is also a co-worker of Williams and was aware he had shot him, the release said.

Grey was taken to the detention center as well.

Anyone with further information on the shooting can contact Sgt. John Adams at 843-255-3415 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CrimeSC.
