Hilton Head parking lot shooter still at large
The suspect in a fatal Hilton Head Island shooting Feb. 18 still has not been identified though investigators said Tuesday the attack was a targeted one.
Darnell Williams, 44, was shot to death in the Haig Point Embarkation parking lot on Helmsman Way around 2 p.m.
He was scheduled to work at Haig Point late that afternoon and was seen walking through the parking lot toward the ferry staging area shortly before he was shot, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office release.
A few minutes later, he was found by another Haig Point employee wounded and lying next to an unoccupied vehicle.
Williams was flown to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah and pronounced dead upon arrival, the release said.
The suspect was described as a black male around 5-feet-7-inches tall and carrying a black backpack.
Investigators believe Williams may have had a brief interaction with the shooter just before the incident, the release said.
Williams was wearing a black quilted jacket, black pants, black Crocs, a black ski cap and was carrying a black backpack over his shoulder before he was shot.
Anyone who saw Williams or anything suspicious around the time of the shooting can contact Sgt. John Adams at 843-255-3415 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CrimeSC.
