Victim named in Sun City lagoon wreck

HiltonHead

The man killed Saturday when his car crashed into a Sun City lagoon has been identified as a 71-year-old Bluffton resident and longtime carrier for The Island Packet.

Wreck victim Gary Gallagher’s death was ruled an accidental drowning, though Beaufort County Deputy Coroner David Ott said he also had an underlying medical condition.

Gallagher’s 2007 Honda Accord crashed into a lagoon near Rainwater Lane early Saturday morning and was submerged when the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office dive team was called to the scene around 6:10 a.m.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck.
