Sheriff's Office investigating shooting on St. Helena Island

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that left a man wounded on St. Helena Island, according to a news release.



The man was shot around 6:40 a.m. in his backyard on Coffin Point Road. He was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital for treatment, the release said.



No other details have been released.



The Sheriff's Office searched for the suspect and are canvassing the area to locate possible witnesses, the release said.



The suspect description has so far been limited to an African-American man wearing dark clothing, Sheriff's Office spokesman Capt. Bob Bromage said.



An investigation into the shooting incident is ongoing.
