Cyclist struck by vehicle on Hilton Head Island
A bicyclist is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday on Hilton Head Island, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office spokesman.
The cyclist was trying to cross Gumtree Road near the Marshside Apartments when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle around 6:45 p.m., Capt. Bob Bromage said.
Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue transported the injured man to Hilton Head Airport to be airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, department spokeswoman Joheida Fister said.
The crash victim, Ryan Beckman, was identified by a relative on Facebook on Wednesday. Courtney Beckman said Beckman is in the hospital's intensive care unit in critical condition in her post and thanked friends for sending prayers and support.
Gumtree Road was shut down for about an hour after the crash, Bromage said.
The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
