Hilton Head Island break-in suspect wore shower curtain to hide face

The suspect who allegedly broke into a Hilton Head Island restaurant Monday night while wearing a shower curtain to obscure his face had recently been fired from the restaurant, according to a report from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

A manager at Steamers Restaurant on Hilton Head arrived at work Tuesday morning to find that a closet door had been pried open and the restaurant's money bags and cash register drawer missing, the report said. A towel had also been thrown over a security camera in the restaurant's office.

Investigators and the restaurant manager reviewed the security footage, which showed a man enter the office with a shower curtain obscuring his face and body. The man threw a towel over one camera, but a second camera in the office showed the man take off the curtain and attempt to open the door.

When the man could not open the door, he turned away in the direct view of the office's second camera. The manager said she recognized the man as an employee fired Dec. 3 for stealing money, the report said.

The man quickly covered the second camera with a towel and tried to obscure his face with the shower curtain again. He then used a crowbar to break open the closet door and take the money before leaving.

Investigators confirmed the man's identity as the recently fired employee, and an arrest warrant for second-degree burglary has been issued, the report said.
