Investigation into disappearance of Beaufort man continues

The investigation into the disappearance of a Beaufort man last month is still active, a Beaufort Police Department spokeswoman said Thursday.

Police had no information to release concerning the disappearance of Ver'mon Steve, who has been missing since Oct. 25, spokeswoman Cpl. Hope Able said.

Beaufort police announced charges earlier this week against two men charged with kidnapping an acquaintance of Steve's the day he went missing, but Able declined to say if the two men were being considered suspects or persons of interest in Steve's disappearance.

Varsheen Antuan Smith, 39, and Tyron Anthony Wallace, 21, were charged with kidnapping after an acquaintance of Steve's went to his home on Green Street. When he arrived, the acquaintance was allegedly held at gunpoint and tied up by Smith and Wallace, according to a police department news release.

Smith, Steve's roommate, and Wallace allegedly threatened him with the gun before deciding to let him go. They both fled the state after the incident, but were arrested and brought back to Beaufort County this week.

Both men are being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center.
