After Hilton Head Island donut shop manager chases them, burglars take a powder

The manager of a Hilton Head Island Dunkin Donuts chased two men attempting to steal the store's cash drawer Saturday.

Beaufort County deputies responded to a call made by the manager who lives above the store, according to a report by Savannah television station WJCL.

The manager said he went downstairs to the store early that morning to find two males wearing dark hooded sweatshirts, the report said.

The suspects escaped through a side window with the cash drawer.

The manager chased them and the suspects dropped the cash drawer and ran away, the report said.

When deputies arrived, they saw a man riding a bicycle nearby who matched the description of one of the suspects, the report said.

The man ran from deputies when they attempted to stop him near Sandalwood Terrace Apartments.

After a foot pursuit, deputies arrested a 17-year-old male.

The teenager was found with a .22 caliber handgun, marijuana and more than $1,000 in cash in his pockets, the report said.

He was charged with unlawful carry of a firearm, fleeing to evade law enforcement and possession of marijuana, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center's website.

His bond was set in excess of $26,000 and he is expected to appear before a judge Nov. 20.

Deputies were unable to locate the other suspect, the report said.
