On the anniversary of her disappearance, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is seeking information on a Hilton Head Island woman who was last seen in her apartment 24 years ago.

April Vlk, 37, was reported missing from her Sea Side Villas apartment by her father Oct. 23, 1991, according to the Sheriff's Office news release.

Vlk's father had last seen her Sept. 17 of that year.

Witnesses at a local church said a barefoot woman matching Vlk's description stopped there and asked for cardboard to use for a hitchhiking sign, the release said.

The woman allegedly wrote "Washington, D.C." on the cardboard and said she was leaving the island, the release said.

The woman was given $20 to buy shoes at WalMart and then left the church, the release said.

Vlk has not been seen or heard from since.

Investigators do not know whether the woman was successful in her efforts to leave Hilton Head or if she encountered foul play, the release said.

Vlk's DNA profile is stored in the National Missing Persons DNA database.

Anyone with information regarding Vlk's whereabouts can call Capt. Bob Bromage at 843-255-3402 or email him at robertb@bcgov.net.

Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-888-CRIMESC.
