Assault suspect motorcyclist leads deputies on a chase, crashes, is arrested

A Bluffton man was charged with assault and battery after leading deputies on a chase and wrecking his motorcycle Monday, injuring himself and a female passenger.

Steven Smith, 47, was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center after deputies responded to the area of Helmsman Way and Haig Point on Hilton Head Island around 1:30 a.m., according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report

Deputies found a man standing by the roadway who said he had been assaulted by the driver of a motorcycle, the report said.

As the victim spoke with deputies, he pointed at the roadway and said the motorcycle was coming back, the report said.

One deputy stepped onto the road and attempted to get the motorcycle to pull over. The motorcyclist swerved around him and headed toward Arrow Road, the report said.

Deputies eventually located the motorcycle, which had crashed on Arrow Road, the report said.

A woman who had been a passenger on the motorcycle was found lying in a ditch, partially submerged in water, conscious but with a bloody nose, the report said.

The woman identified the driver as Smith, but could not say where he had gone.

Smith was later located unconscious in the nearby brush and taken to Hilton Head Regional Medical Center, the report said.

After he was treated, deputies obtained an arrest warrant for Smith, who is being held on a $1,092 bond.
